CARBONAI AND GREENPLINTH AFRICA TO PARTNER ON MAJOR CLEAN COOKSTOVE PROGRAM IN NIGERIA

Calgary-based GHG software developer will support the digital quantification and verification of carbon credits resulting from the distribution of millions of clean cookstoves in Nigeria and Africa over the next five years.

CALGARY, Alberta & LAGOS, Nigeria, Jan 31 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) — CarbonAi Inc. and Greenplinth Africa Limited are pleased to announce that they have entered into an agreement under which CarbonAi will provide its software tools to support the digital measurement, reporting and verification (DMRV) of greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions from a major clean cookstove program to be developed by Greenplinth Africa in Nigeria.

The program will distribute millions of clean cookstoves to households across Nigeria and Africa over the next five years, drastically reducing deforestation, GHG emissions, respiratory illness, gender inequality and other issues associated with traditional open-fire cooking.

Clean cookstoves are a critical project type for achieving sustainable development benefits in economically disadvantaged regions. They are often financed by the sale of carbon credits resulting from the displacement of open-fire cooking by highly efficient, cleaner-burning stoves. Carbon-financed cookstove projects have been subject to intense scrutiny related to the accuracy and reliability of conventional quantification methods, putting the continued financing of such projects—and the many benefits they generate—at grave risk.

CarbonAi has developed Spark, a patent-pending suite of tools for the end-to-end quantification, verification, issuance and management of high-integrity GHG reduction outcomes from cookstove projects. This includes a proprietary stove use meter to monitor and precisely measure cookstove usage. Spark was developed to bridge the gap between existing carbon market infrastructure and the emerging digital carbon market ecosystem to provide irrefutable proof of claimed GHG reductions, helping project developers to deliver high-integrity, high-value carbon credits.

“This Article 6.4 clean cookstoves project is a transformative initiative, and a significant step forward in combatting the adverse health and environmental impacts associated with traditional cooking methods, such as indoor air pollution and deforestation. It will also be a foreign exchange earner for the Nigerian economy,” said Dr. Olawale Akinwumi, President and CEO of Greenplinth Africa. “The provision of free clean cookstoves is set to transform the lives of millions of Nigerians, particularly women and children, who are disproportionately affected by the harmful effects of traditional cooking practices.”

“We are excited to support Greenplinth Africa as they leverage Nigeria’s tremendous natural and human resources to deliver large-scale climate impact projects across Nigeria,” stated CarbonAi’s Chief Carbon Officer, Yvan Champagne. “Scaling clean cooking is absolutely critical in any GHG mitigation pathway but it will only happen if project investors and carbon credit buyers have confidence in the integrity of underlying reductions. We look forward to helping Greenplinth Africa generate the highest quality emission reductions possible, thereby ensuring that the program will reach its full potential.”

FOREIGN STUDENTS VISIT MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL IN CHINA’S TIANJIN

TIANJIN, China, Nov. 25, 2024 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/–

Foreign students visit martial arts school in China’s Tianjin.

Recently, the Publicity Department of Xiqing District organized a tour, guiding more than a hundred foreign contestants who participated in the Chinese Bridge series of Chinese proficiency competitions around the Tianjin Huoyuanjia School in Jingwu Town, Xiqing District, north China’s Tianjin Municipality, where they experienced the charm of Chinese traditional martial arts culture.

The Tianjin Huoyuanjia School has a profound cultural heritage, with its roots in the Chin Woo Athletic Association, which in turn traces its origins back to Huo Yuanjia, a patriotic martial arts master.

In 1910, Huo, along with others, co-founded the Chin Woo Athletic Association, which has now been established for 114 years. The association initially advocated mastering both martial arts and being literate, and strengthening the nation through physical fitness, which made up the essence and defining characteristics of the early Chin Woo culture.

Over the past century, the association has not only seen a steady increase in its membership, but also a growing expansion of its influence. It has transcended national boundaries, spreading from China to other countries and from Asia to the rest of the world, with branches now established across all five continents, totaling 83 Chin Woo associations. The popularity of the association has become a unique cultural phenomenon within the global cultural community, beloved and pursued by people from various countries.

The Jingwu Town in Xiqing District said it will continue to leverage the Tianjin Huoyuanjia School, an international cultural exchange base for overseas Chinese, as a platform to strengthen the exploration and inheritance of Chinese culture.

By promoting Chinese martial arts and Chin Woo culture, the town aims to allow more international friends to learn about and experience the profound Chinese cultural heritage, share first-hand stories about the real China, and expand the reach of fine traditional Chinese culture.

YANTAI REVEALS INTERNATIONAL ZERO-CARBON ISLAND COOPERATION INITIATIVE AT COP29

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (Bernama) — Yantai City, Shandong Province, has launched the International Zero-Carbon Island Cooperation Initiative together with 32 island cities, international organisations, research institutions, enterprises, and other founding entities at home and abroad.

This initiative, released at the Launch Conference of International Zero-Carbon Island Cooperation Initiative held during the UNFCCC COP29 on Nov 13, aims to promote global climate governance through joint efforts.

The launch event, hosted by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Shandong Provincial People’s Government, was supported by the Shandong Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, the Shandong Provincial Department of Ecological Environment, and the Yantai Municipal People’s Government.

Representatives from China, island nations, and international organisations attended and voiced their support for the initiative, according to a statement.

With over 50,000 islands worldwide facing shared challenges due to climate change, the need for an international organisation dedicated to supporting islands sustainability has become urgent.

Yantai City mayor, Zheng Deyan called on global island stakeholders to unite under the initiative to contribute to both sustainable development and global climate campaigns.

The International Zero-Carbon Island Cooperation Organization, the world’s first international organisation dedicated to zero-carbon islands, will focus on enhancing the climate resilience of islands, strengthening infrastructure and disaster response capabilities, and promoting mutual assistance in the sharing of emergency relief supplies.

The organisation aims to explore zero-carbon pathways, build clean energy systems, promote green buildings, transportation, and communities, and foster the development of low-carbon industries such as modern marine fisheries, modern agriculture, and low-carbon tourism.

It will also protect ecological resources, strengthen the protection, development, utilisation, research, and management of island resources, and enhance academic and cultural exchange among islands.
