Amazon pledges to run zero carbon business, come 2040

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Amazon has become the first signatory of The Climate Pledge, a commitment to meet the Paris Agreement, 10 years earlier than scheduled.

The Climate Pledge calls on signatories to be net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Accord’s goal of 2050.

Companies which signed for the pledge have agreed to measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis; implement decarbonisation strategies; and, neutralise remaining emissions.

Amazon founder and chief executive officer, Jeff Bezos said: “If a company with as much physical infrastructure as Amazon, which delivers more than 10 billion items annually, can meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early, then any company can.

“Large companies signing The Climate Pledge will send an important signal to the market that it’s time to invest in the products and services the signatories will need to meet their commitments.”

Also one of the pledge’s signatories, Global Optimism founding partner and UN’s former climate change chief, Christiana Figueres said: “Bold steps by big companies will make a huge difference in the development of new technologies and industries to support a low carbon economy.”

Amazon previously announced investment in Rivian, a producer of emission-free electric vehicles. Amazon plans to have 10,000 new electric vehicles on the road as early as 2022 and all 100,000 by 2030 – saving four million metric tonnes of carbon per year by 2030.

China’s historical, cultural hub Hangzhou shifts development focus

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — The eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou is expanding to the east and embracing the Qiantang River, marking a development focus shifting from the West Lake.

Hangzhou’s Jianggan District is holding the third Qiantang River International Cultural Festival to spread over five months, beginning July, in a bid to embed cultural genes into the city’s development strategy of embracing the Yangtze River.

Hangzhou has adjusted the ‘circular development approach’ with the West Lake as its centre by making the river as the permanent main line of its long-term development.

It is also establishing the development philosophy of urban eastward expansion, boosting tourism in the west, and development along the Qiantang River.

Specifically, the core of the Qiantang River culture is braving challenges and striving for excellence, staying open-minded and seeking exchanges and mutual prosperity.

The Jianggan District is the bridgehead and pioneer area for the co-development with the Qiantang River.

Held for three consecutive years, the Qiantang River International Cultural Festival has carried out 41 main activities and more than 50 related activities, attracting over 3.1 million participants.
