GLOBAL EXPERTS AND PRACTITIONERS UNITE TO IMPROVE OCEAN HEALTH BY TACKLING SYSTEMIC CHALLENGES IN MARINE MANAGEMENT

Global experts from the United Nations Environment Programme, The Nature Conservancy, governments, research agencies, and the private sector are coming together to share best practices in improving marine management based on lessons learned around the world.

LISBON, Portugal, June 29 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) — Marine protected areas (MPAs) are key tools for reducing threats to biodiversity, safeguarding marine and coastal habitats, building climate solutions, and supporting human needs through sustainable use. The Convention on Biological Diversity’s Global Biodiversity Framework may include an ambitious target of expanding MPA coverage to 30% by 2030. However, less than 3% of marine protected areas are meeting their objectives in the face of accelerating local and global threats.

To tackle this challenge, a team of experts is convening at the United Nations Oceans Conference in June 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal in a side event entitled, “Quality Matters: Enhancing Governance, Effective Management and Resilience of Marine Protected Areas for Multiple Co-benefits.” The event includes speakers from the private sector, local marine science agencies, representatives from non-profit organizations, governments, and intergovernmental organizations. Speakers will share how they are spearheading technological innovation and best practices in marine management and will spotlight valuable tools, increase collaboration, knowledge sharing, and uptake of lessons learned. Dr. Lizzie McLeod, Global Reefs Lead for The Nature Conservancy notes, “Strong partnerships including the private sector, governments, NGOs, researchers, and local communities are essential to improving ocean health. Harnessing lessons learned and best practices globally to improve ocean management is a conservation priority including the co-creation of solutions with key partners.”

Building on this event, the United Nations Environment Programme, The Nature Conservancy, and other conservation partners, with support from Mary Kay Inc., are developing a suite of decision support tools for marine managers that improve marine management, support the sustainable financing of marine protected areas, and guide marine habitat restoration building on best practices around the world. By leveraging scientific innovation and new technologies and global best practices, marine managers are better able to tackle major threats facing marine ecosystems around the world. “MPAs are key to ocean health and sustainable development. But they are not always effective without a range of support. Decision support tools that enable improved MPA design and management, knowledge sharing, and collaboration are needed to give marine stakeholders the support they need to better protect the oceans,” said Ole Vestergard, Programme Officer, United Nations Environment Programme.

“Mary Kay is delighted to support TNC, in collaboration with UNEP and other experts from around the world, in an effort to protect our world’s most precious assets: oceans,” said Deborah Gibbins, Mary Kay’s Chief Operating Officer. “These organizations are on the frontlines of the fight to preserve our waterways, and we’re hopeful that with Mary Kay’s support, they’ll have the tools and resources needed to ensure our oceans are healthy for generations to come.

As governments refine their conservation targets, it is timely to highlight new innovations and technologies that help countries meet global biodiversity and sustainable development goals. New decision tools and foundational science are needed to enhance the capacity of marine planners and managers to better manage marine habitats in the face of climate change and other threats.

We recognize collaboration is crucial to new discoveries, and partnerships with scientific, medical, and academic communities are vital collaborations—which is why we’re thrilled to award these scientific grants.”

The Mary Kay Skin Health/Skin Disease Research Grants were announced at last year’s meeting in partnership with SID. The $25,000 grants were to be awarded to four researchers conducting incredible work in skin research to uncover new perspectives and invention strategies. In the months following the 2021 SID meeting, the company received applications from scientists across the country.

The four grant awardees ultimately selected were:

· Dr. Allison C. Billi, MD, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor in the Dept of Dermatology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Billi’s primary research goal is to understand “what drives photoaging.” The grant will fund research to identify targetable pathways that help prevent or potentially reverse the effects of photoaging.
· Dr. Angel S. Byrd, MD, Ph.D. and Assistant Professor at Howard University College of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor at JHUSOM (Departments of Dermatology). Dr. Byrd’s work focuses on the genetic basis of melasma. This grant will fund research to help discover unknown genetic causes of melasma to design personalized treatment options.
· Dr. Mae Alexandra Carpenter, Ph.D. Trainee at Wright State University. Dr. Carpenter’s work explores how damaged DNA-containing particles are released and how they activate inflammatory pathways. Funding this research will help develop new therapeutic approaches to reduce UVB photosensitivity in autoinflammatory diseases.
· Dr. Jennifer Powers, MD and Clinical Associate Professor in the Dept of Dermatology at the University of Iowa. Dr. Powers is interested in the influence of the microbiome and the healing environment on wound healing and scar formation. Funding for this research will help understand how the immune system and microbiota interact to modify scar formation from ulcers and surgical wounds.

“Congratulations to each of our 2022 grant award recipients,” added Dr. Gildea. “These individuals were carefully chosen in collaboration with the Society for Investigative Dermatology—and we are thrilled to support their research.”

The sponsorship and grants revealed at SID are just the latest efforts by Mary Kay to reinforce the company’s long-standing commitment to advancing skin health research and development. Impulse Dynamics: First international implants of Optimizer Smart Mini system in Italy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) — Impulse Dynamics, a commercial-stage medical device company focused on delivering CCM therapy to people with heart failure, announced that the first implants in Europe for the newly launched Optimizer® Smart Mini device were recently completed in Italy.

According to a statement, the company announced the launch of the new technology on April 29, 2022, and the first U.S. implants on May 10, 2022.

In March 2022, the company announced that its quality management system received certification under the new European Union Medical Device Regulation.

The new components of the Optimizer Smart Mini system are equally important across international markets, including a rechargeable battery with a 20-year life and new internal technology with improved programming and potential for remote monitoring in a smaller design to make the implant procedure easier for patients and physicians.

“The pace of this international rollout is a reflection of our commitment to delivering innovation that is relevant to patients worldwide,” said Mateusz Zelewski, MD, Impulse Dynamics’ Vice President International.

“It is exciting to see how quickly we can increase access to new and better technology that offers hope for more patients living with heart failure.”

The Optimizer Smart Mini delivers CCM therapy, which consists of electric pulses applied to the heart between heartbeats and serves to enhance the performance of cardiac muscular contraction, making the heart work more efficiently without increasing the heart rate or the oxygen consumption of the cardiac muscle.

CCM therapy is currently indicated in Europe to reduce hospitalisations and improve physical exercise tolerance, quality of life, and functional status for a large population of patients with systolic heart failure who remain symptomatic despite guideline-directed medical therapy.

To date, CCM therapy has already been used to treat over 7,000 patients worldwide and is available in 44 countries. The therapy has been studied in almost 2,000patients and has appeared in more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles.
